WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
The primary function is to ensure proper concrete cover—the layer of concrete between the rebar and the
surface. This is critical for several reasons:
CORROSION
PROTECTION: It prevents moisture and de-icing
salts from reaching the rebar, which would cause it to rust, expand, and crack
the concrete.
STRUCTURAL

concrete cover protects the rebar from high
temperatures in a fire for a specified period.
